Cardboard Chair

Industrial Design | Rapid Prototyping

The Challenge

Design a portable cardboard chair with a backrest, that can be disassembled into a complete rectangle of size 48” x 80”, without any gluing materials

Design Process

Idea #1 A chair that can rotate to transform into a standing desk

Issues: Required too much internal support to rest on prism edges, which distorted the intended profiles

Idea #2 A chair transforms into a standing desk by raising the seat

Progress: The seat is very stable due to the two interlocking prisms and tension between the top folds

Issues: Unnecessary material wasted in the backrest, standing desk is just two stacked prisms and doesn't need the backrest board

Experimenting with Idea #2

Progress: Backrest is more useful now, and there is space to rest one’s legs.

Issues: Table got lost in the process and the lack of modularity makes it less interesting.

Final Idea - A chair with a desk attached in the front and a backrest, all made up of interlocking prisms of different heights
